2000 Canoe Ridge Merlot
Columbia Valley, Washington $20-$23
Marvelous Merlots and uncommon Cabernet Sauvignons are the hallmarks of Washington State's wine industry. A blend of 77 percent Merlot, 22 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 1 percent Cabernet Franc, this wine was aged 14 months in a combination of 75 percent French oak and 25 percent American oak. Roasted coffee, leather and chocolate aromas give way to cassis, cherry and spice flavors. Drink now and for the next six years. Good with a variety of dishes, including smoked and grilled meats, pork loin, cheeses, and grilled or roasted vegetables. Available at Hopper's Wines and Spirits, The Wine Seller, Martin's Wine Cellar (Metairie location), Cellars of River Ridge, Habano's of Slidell and Hugh's Wine Cellar in Covington.
