New Orleans City Park Tennis Center
has received an "Outstanding Facility Award" for 2003 by the U.S. Tennis Association.
The USTA honored City Park for excellence in overall layout and court conditions,
aesthetics and accommodations, and its programs that support the growth of tennis.
City Park was one of eight large tennis centers across the country cited by
the USTA as "a top-notch environment" for tennis players and spectators.
Irvin Mayfield
has been named a "cultural ambassador" of New Orleans and Louisiana. State, local
and federal officials including Mayor Ray Nagin and Gov. Mike Foster say the jazz
trumpeter's role is to build and promote relationships, through music, "that will
foster sustained dialogue concerning cultural exchange and economic development
for the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana."
The state Department of Environmental Quality
came under fire by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which reported
eight major problems in the state's oversight of air pollution programs and
controls. Among other lapses, the EPA cited the state for failure to renew expired
permits and delays in issuing permits; poor bookkeeping for its Title V program,
and a shoddy filing system. The DEQ said it would fix the problems.
