Delayed Action
Taqueros (2723 Roosevelt Blvd., 441-8888) is still open in
Kenner, for lunch Wednesday through Saturday and dinner Wednesday through Sunday.
The restaurant's move to the former Town & Country store on St. Charles Avenue
(an event highly anticipated by its Orleans Parish fans) has been pushed back,
again, to March. When the new location does open, it will contain two restaurants:
Coyoacan, a fine dining venue, upstairs and Taqueros, a more casual taqueria,
on the first floor.
Flying Slice
Slice (1513 St. Charles Avenue), a pizzeria from the Cal-Mex
kings at Juan's Flying Burrito, is slated to open in the same Lower Garden District
neighborhood late next month. Warren Chapoton, a majority partner at Juan's, ran
a pizzeria in Atlanta for 10 years prior to settling in New Orleans; his brother,
Dickie, assured me that Warren throws a mean New York-style pie. The restaurant
will open mornings for Italian pastries and coffees; a bartender will continue
to serve warmed pizzas until 2 a.m.
Wacky Shack
Shimmy Shack (1855 Dock St., Harahan, 729-4442) is fully operational
as of early December. Jimmy Collings, as polished a jokester as he is a bar owner-restaurateur,
transported some of Rivershack's (3449 River Road, Jefferson, 834-4938) wacky
spirit to Harahan, staining Shimmy Shack's cypress bar with 150-year-old Grand
Marnier and installing video poker machines in the former bank building's vault.
The kitchen serves steaks, quesadillas, salads and lots in between from 11 a.m.
to roughly 10:30 p.m. daily.
Run to the Hill
The folks at Hillbilly Barbecue (202 Tallulah Ave., 738-1508),
primarily a take-out joint, are looking to expand. Providing they find the end
of the bureaucratic red tape, they will bust into an additional dining room to
seat about 24 people. One employee told me that currently at lunchtime, diners
eat standing up, outside, which is testament to Hillbilly's luscious pork shoulder
and smoked chicken salad sandwiches.
Time Out
Luigi's (915 Decatur St.) is closed indefinitely for renovations.
For the time being, the Italian grocery's delicious muffaletta sandwiches have
relocated to Matassa's Market (1001 Dauphine St., 412-8700).
Once More, With Feeling
At press time, seats were still available for the one-night
return of the Galatoire¹s Monologues, this Saturday
at Le Chat Noir. Performances are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 9
p.m.; advance tickets cost $19 with a one-drink minimum. Call
581-5812.
