Museum Curator of Collections Paula Ussery discusses "If Only In My Dreams,
Christmas Customs of WWII." Includes illustrations of artifacts and oral history

JAZZ HISTORY. New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park Visitor Center,
916 N. Peters St., 589-4841. Park ranger Bambi Sears traces the history
of New Orleans brass band music from past to present. Free admission. 3 p.m.

FAIRMONT NEW YEAR'S EVE. Fairmont Hotel, 123 Baronne St., Imperial
Ballroom, 522-5555 or 529-7111. The hotel holds the annual New Year's Eve
party that features a performance by the Grammy-winning Neville Brothers. Chef
William McIlroy prepares a four-course dinner and an open bar will be available.
Also included are party favors, a midnight champagne toast and a balloon drop.
Tickets $195. Special room rates available for guests of the party. 8:30 p.m.
NEW YEAR'S EVE DANCE. Mandeville Community Center, 3090 E. Causeway
Approach, Mandeville, (985) 624-3127. Our Lady of the Lake Christian Singles
hosts the New Year's dance with Mickey D. and the Deville's. Tickets $20. 9
p.m. to 1 a.m.
NEW ORLEANS NEW YEAR'S EVE. Decatur Street, in front of Jackson Square.
The City's official New Year's Eve celebration features performances by
local musicians on a stage set up on Decatur Street. R&B singer Euricka opens
the show, followed by violinist Theresa Andersson and her group. The music will
pause for the traditional lowering of the "King Cake Baby" and fireworks display.
Big Sam's Funky Nation will then close out the show. Free admission. 10 p.m.
Thursday 1
Y2K-9 RACE. Jefferson SPCA, 1 Humane Way, Harahan, 734-7590. The
2-mile Hair of the Dog Race & Fun Run benefits the SPCA. For adults, children
and canines. Includes post-race party with black-eyed peas, cabbage and beer.
Registration $15 adults, $10 children. 11 a.m.
Friday 2
SHAMROCK BOWL PARADE. Monaghan's Erin Rose, 811 Conti St., 523-8619.
French Quarter parade includes the Storyville Stompers, Kazoozie Floozies,
fire trucks and more as it makes its way to the parade stop at Molly's at the
Market. Free admission. 4 p.m.

Sessions in computer training for those 16 and older. Students are allowed

The Mystic Krewe of Satyricon holds its annual ball to raise money for its
organization. The formal ball features entertainment by Tommy Elias and his
Fancy Band, choosing of the king and queen, and raffle tickets for prizes. Night
includes buffet and cash bar. Donation $25. 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday 4
JACKSON DAY RACE. Old Spanish Fort Ruins, Beauregard Street near the
intersection of Robert E. Lee Boulevard and Wisner Avenue, 482-6682. The
9K race continues in its 97th year. Begins at Bayou St. John, runs along Orleans
Avenue into the French Quarter to finish at Jackson Square. Post race festivities
at Jax Brewery. Entry fees $15-$20. 8:30 a.m.
TIGER SUGAR BASH. State Palace Theatre, 1108 Canal St., 522-4435.
Football fans are invited to watch the Sugar Bowl matchup between LSU and
Oklahoma televised on a 35-foot-by-25-foot screen, with concert sound, fully
stocked bar, food and merchandise. Free admission (VIP/preferred seating available).

JPAS CHILDREN'S VOCAL PROGRAM. First Christian Church, 8121 Airline Hwy.,
Metairie, 885-2000. The JPAS is accepting members from the Greater New Orleans
area for the choir of more than 125 children, ages 4-18. The spring semester
will include concerts, a Broadway revue, a New York tour and a production of
Oliver. Call for audition times for students in grades 2-12. Saturday
and Jan. 10.
NEW ORLEANS CHILDREN'S CHORUS. Grace Lutheran Church, 5800 Canal Blvd.,
488-5973. The New Orleans Children's Chorus and Youth Chorale hold auditions
to fill openings in various choirs for the remainder of the season. Children
ages 5-18 may audition within the first two weeks of January. The Concert Chorus
will perform in New York in June and the Youth Chorale will perform in Charlotte,
