Montaudon Brut Non-Vintage Champagne
Reims, France $23-$30
Montaudon, one of the rare Champagne houses today still owned by its founding family, produces handcrafted, superb wines from a small vineyard estate. Critically acclaimed and an excellent value, Montaudon's high quality places it on a par with much more expensive Champagnes from better-known houses. Rich and toasty, the blend of 50 percent Pinot Noir, and 25 percent each Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, offers almond and brioche toast notes accented by green apple and lime. Elegant and lively, Montaudon is a personal favorite. Good with grilled shrimp, caviar and smoked salmon. Available at Cork & Bottle, Whole Foods Market on Esplanade Avenue, Vieux Carré Wines, The Wine Seller, both Martin Wine Cellars, Langenstein's (Metairie), Rouse's #14 and Acquistapace's and Hugh's in Covington.
