INDIA PALACE
3322 N. Turnbull Drive, Metairie
889-2436
www.indianpalacerestaurant.com
The secret to the tandoori prawns is the tandoor, a traditional earthen clay pot heated with wood charcoal. The meats and seafood are marinated overnight in a spiced herbed yogurt then baked in the tandoor on skewers, making them incredibly tender. The prawns and meat are then served on a sizzling platter with vegetables. Delivery available. Reservations recommended. Lunch Monday through Friday, dinner daily, brunch Saturday and Sunday. Credit cards and checks. $$

NIRVANA INDIAN CUISINE
4308 Magazine St. 894-9797
This Uptown spot has become a mainstay for Indian food in just a few short years. The shrimp Kali Mirch features shrimp in black peppered onion gravy and seasoned spices, while the Baingan Bharta is broiled egglant with fresh herbs and spicy seasoning. Reservations recommended for parties of more than five. Lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$

PEACOCK INDIAN RESTAURANT
3410 Williams Blvd., Kenner
469-0553
www.peacockindiancuisine.com

For Indian cuisine in the suburbs, check out Peacock's lunch buffet, with a menu of offerings that changes daily. If you choose an entree from the regular menu, the preparation time for some items can be up to a half hour, so you might want to start with an appetizer such as the Rogan Josh, lamb sauteed with onions and curry and served with rice or naan. Reservations accepted. Lunch and dinner Wednesday through Monday. Credit cards. $$

TAJ MAHAL INDIAN CUISINE
923-C Metairie Road, Metairie
836-6859

Taj Mahal brings you an adventure in Indian cuisine, from the 10 kinds of bread to the curry dishes that can be ordered in degrees of spiciness (from mild to ³crazy hot²). Warm up with the Shahi Murgh: stuffed chicken breast with paneer (homemade cheese) and fresh herbs and spices in a tomato and nutty cream sauce. Delivery available. Reservations recommended. Lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$

TANDOORI CHICKEN
115 University Place 299-1926
If you read this whole issue (we double-dare you!) you will not find another restaurant that boasts a menu of more than 80 selections -- half of which are vegetarian. Welcome to Tandoori Chicken, a friendly Indian restaurant in the CBD. The management invites you to try the palak paneer, a spinach and cheese vegetarian dish. Or, try the chicken tikka masala, a boneless chicken in spicy cream tomato sauce. The lunch buffet is still $8.99. No reservations. Lunch Monday through Saturday, dinner daily. Credit cards. $$
