Thomas Doyle in New Orleans

This week, Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP) Louisiana is sponsoring its first public events in New Orleans. At 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, in the field in front of the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park, Thomas Doyle will join a public candlelight vigil in honor of victims of clerical sex abuse who have committed suicide. SNAP member Janet Patterson of Wichita, Kan., whose son killed himself, will call the names of victims. Local SNAP coordinator Lyn Hill Hayward encourages Catholics to attend to "show support for victims and their families, to support priests of integrity, and to work for change in the church." SNAP and Voice of the Faithful are co-sponsoring the event.

The lecture and panel discussion "Clericalism and the Abuse of Power in the Sexual Abuse Crisis in the Catholic Church" will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, in Nunemaker Hall at Loyola University. Following a lecture by Father Thomas Doyle, a panel discussion will feature Jason Berry, coauthor of Vows of Silence and author of the groundbreaking 1992 book Lead Us Not Into Temptation; SNAP national founder Barbara Blaine; and Robert Scamardo, who last year publicly announced he could no longer serve as an attorney for the Catholic church because he himself had been molested by a priest.

For more information about SNAP activities, call Lyn Hill Hayward at (985) 893-9241 or (985) 630-6638, or contact her by email at lynh@charter.net

At 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, Jason Berry will discuss and sign Vows of Silence at the Garden District Book Shop, 2727 Prytania St. For more information on next month's signing, call 895-2266.
