WINE OF THE WEEK By Brenda Maitland 02 24 04

2002 Henri Bourgeois "Les Baronnes" Sancerre
Loire Valley, France
$16-$20

A Sauvignon Blanc both for people who think they don't like these wines and those who love them, this wine represents the pinnacle of how classic Sauvignon Blanc is supposed to taste. The Loire Valley's chalky, limestone terroir from the hills and ridges between Sancerre and Chavignol produce clean, slightly vegetal -- like fresh asparagus, flinty aromatics, preceding crisp, lean fruit with a lively acidity and concentrated, racy flavors. A very food-friendly wine that's great with raw oysters, artichokes, asparagus, trout meuniere, etouffee, shrimp scampi and Asian cuisine. Available at Whole Foods Market (Uptown location), The Wine Seller, Vieux Carré Wine and Spirits, Prytania Liquor Store, Elio's Wine Warehouse, Dorignac's and Hugh's Wine Cellar in Mandeville.
