1998 Pelissero Piani Barbera d'Alba
Piedmont, Italy
$20-$22

The most planted grape in Italy's Piedmont region, Barbera wines exude vibrant fruit flavors, supple textures, refreshing acidity and mild, even tannins. Many of the most outstanding Barberas are from the area around Alba, where this well-balanced wine was produced. Aged 18 months in either oak casks or barriques, the wine rests an additional nine months before release. In the glass, complex aromas of blackberry with nuances of cedar are followed in the mouth by velvety flavors of juicy red and dark cherries, spice and chocolate. Ready to drink now. Good with rosemary chicken, roast duck, venison and meatloaf. Available at The Wine Seller, Bacchanal and Cellars of River Ridge.
