The Best and the Worst of the Week

The American Pet Products Manufacturers Association
recently held its annual trade show in New Orleans -- and before leaving, filled two semi-trucks with tons of animal products to donate to the Louisiana SPCA. The SPCA, in turn, planned to share the bounty with other local animal shelters. The APPMA hosted more than 600 pet-product manufacturing companies from around the world for its 46th annual convention March 17-19.

Tulane University biomedical engineering students
unveiled a slew of inventions designed to improve quality of life for the disabled at the Department of Biomedical Engineering's recent senior team-design show. Twelve teams with four students each designed projects such as all-terrain walkers and wheelchairs, support systems to allow kids with cerebral palsy to play independently, and special-needs bicycles and tricycles.

Loews New Orleans Hotel
recently donated $50,000 to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art at the grand opening of its new Canal Street location. The money is earmarked for the museum's education programs in Orleans Parish public schools. Ogden officials say the gift will have an immediate impact for such ongoing projects as "Artist and Sense of Place," which brings artists into classrooms for hands-on teaching.

Michael Whetstone,
a New Orleans police officer, admitted that while on duty with the 8th District Task Force in the French Quarter, he threatened to arrest two people if they didn't hand over hundreds of dollars withdrawn from ATMs. Whetstone pleaded guilty to 10 felony counts in the scheme, which netted about $900.
