JACK DEMPSEY'S
738 Poland Ave. 943-9914

A timeless jewel of the Bywater, Jack Dempsey's specializes in seafood. Sample it all with the J.D. Platter is a good example of that generosity by offering two stuffed crabs, two crawfish pies, two cups of gumbo, and loads of fried shrimp, oysters, catfish and redfish. Lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Wednesday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$

JACQUES-IMO'S CAFE
8324 Oak St. 861-0886
www.jacquesimoscafe.com

The ³Creole Soul food² at this storied cafe is well worth the wait that builds up most evenings. Start your meal with fried green tomatoes or the shrimp and alligator-sausage cheesecake, then move on to the blackened redfish, served with a spicy crab chile hollandaise sauce. Reservations recommended for parties of five or more. Dinner Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $$

Credit cards. $

THE JAMBALAYA SHOPPE

Jambalaya is king here, but the pork roast or shrimp stew with fettuccine are sure to please. Hearty bowls of chicken-andouille or seafood gumbo attract nearby office workers. Lunch weekdays. Credit cards and checks. $

JAMILA'S CAFE7
808 Maple St. 866-4366

Jamila's is a happy surprise, a bit of Tunisia in a city better known for its local cuisine. Spring means grilling, and Jamila's fires it up and cooks whole red snapper with paprika, cumin, garlic and chutney. The sea scallops come off the grill and into a champagne sauce, then are served with fennel and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Reservations recommended. Lunch Tuesday through Friday, dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$

JAZZ SEAFOOD & STEAKHOUSE
2722 Williams Blvd., Kenner 468-3237

The daily lunch specials here are priced at $4.95 and include popular choices such as the cup of gumbo and half a po-boy. Red beans and rice are served for lunch daily. Dinner entrees include eggplant Orleans, and homemade bread pudding or peach cobbler is a great end to any meal. Reservations accepted. Lunch weekdays, dinner nightly. Credit cards. $$

THE JIMANI
141 Chartres St. 524-0493

The Jimani is a holdover from the days before French Quarter gentrification, with its weathered bar and tall bar stools packed with regulars and locals. The food is unpretentious -- pizza, burgers and other typical bar fare -- although items such as an 8-oz. filet mignon sandwich, the Reuben and the chicken club come as pleasant surprises. Lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $

JIMMY BUFFETT'S MARGARITAVILLE CAFE
1104 Decatur St. 592-2565;

JOE'S CRAB SHACK
8000 Lakeshore Drive 283-1010;
www.landrysseafood.com

While a menu filled with local flavors and a decor to match the rustic essence of a fishing camp, Joe's Crab Shack is definitely a Louisiana seafood restaurant. Joe's prepares crab, shrimp, oysters and fish boiled, fried, grilled or steamed. The barbecued Dungeness crabs are always a favorite. Reservations recommended for large parties.
