NACHO MAMA'S MEXICAN GRILL

The CBD location caters to the business crowd, serving Tex-Mex cafeteria-style, while the newer Uptown location is a traditional sit-down restaurant. As the name might suggest, the nachos are strong, but at the Magazine Street location the shrimp and bacon quesadilla is popular, as is the Great Western Burrito, which has chicken, pork, steak or ground beef in a 12-inch tortilla with cheese. Everyone loves the historic Napoleon House, with its delightfully shabby interior and knowledgeable barkeeps with their penchant for Pimm's Cups. The menu of snacks and Italian entrees features, most notably, one of the best muffalettas in the city, served hot with ham, salami, melted Provolone cheese, and the all-important homemade olive salad. Catering to the CBD's business crowd, the New City Diner offers breakfast and lunch. Salads and deli sandwiches are always popular, but those wanting something a little heartier enjoy the stewed chicken, a breast and wing stewed in homestyle gravy served over rice. Families like New Orleans Food & Spirits' ³Boatload,² a dish whose name hints at the quantity of fried fish, shrimp and oyster included. Formerly known as the Grill Room, this restaurant in the Windsor Court Hotel boasts a wine cellar of more 10,000 bottles. The menu changes to reflect the season, and one of spring's highlights is Lamb Six Ways, a light dish highlighted by leg meat marinated for two days in yogurt and confit lemon before being poached in milk with rosemary and cumin. The name tells you what you get at this New Orleans chain of family restaurants. This casual patio on S. Carrollton Avenue is known for lunch, with daily soups and plate lunch specials. These days, the Carrollton is the most popular sandwich, a fried, boneless chicken breast topped with grilled onions and cheddar cheese on an onion roll. NIRVANA INDIAN CUISINE

To attain that special state of bliss, diners come to Nirvana. The house recommends the lamb Goa, where the tender meat is marinated and sauteed with coconut milk, spices and onions. Vegetarians are fond of the saag paneer, a dish made of homemade farmer's cheese sauteed with creamed spinach. Reservations recommended for parties of five or more. Chef Emeril Lagasse's French Quarter restaurant might be a little more casual, but Emeril's fans will enjoy the energy in the two-story dining room. They also like the cedar plank fish, which features a seasonal catch coated with citrus and horseradish then baked on a cedar plank in the restaurant's signature wood-burning oven. The roasted duck is also a favorite, with duck glazed with a whiskey caramel sauce before being hickory roasted. Reservations recommended. Lunch Monday to Saturday, dinner nightly. Credit cards. $$$

NUVOLARI'S

This Mandeville institution has attracted locals for more than 20 years offering a Louisiana take on Italian fine dining. Try the Mediterranean shrimp, which is sauteed with crushed tomatoes, crushed red pepper and garlic, then topped with feta cheese.
