Spring Restaurant Guide

U

UGLESICH'S
1238 Baronne St. 523-8571;
www.uglesichs.com
Start off with the creamy oyster brie soup, fried oysters with blue cheese dressing, or the new Purgatory Shrimp with gorgonzola dip. For an entree, sample more of this spring's oysters with the barbecue oyster plate, sauteed with new potatoes in olive oil, butter, basil, garlic, Worcestershire and lemon. Lunch Monday through Friday and some Saturdays. Cash only. $$

UGLY DOG SALOON & BBQ
401 Andrew Higgins Drive 569-8459

Grab some extra napkins and bite into some of Ugly Dog's ribs or pulled-pork sandwiches, served with two sides -- choose from baked potato, chili beans, tangy coleslaw, a green salad, or Joby's homemade potato salad. Lunch, dinner and late-night daily. Credit cards. $

UPPERLINE RESTAURANT
1413 Upperline St. 891-9822;
www.upperline.com

This is the place that, in 1992, first coupled the local classic -- fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade. The atmosphere is pure New Orleans, from its tall rooms hung top to bottom with local artwork to owner JoAnn Clevenger, who bustles around, hair piled atop her head, telling stories and giving advice. Reservations recommended. Dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Credit cards. $$$

UPSTAIRS AT MIMI'S
2601 Royal St. 942-0690

The tapas resurgence has floated up the steps from Mimi's in Faubourg Marigny and taken residence above, thanks to the handiwork of former Taqueria Corona chef Joaquin Rodas. There are plenty of options among the hot and cold tapas; for the hot, consider the sherry-braised oxtail, the mushroom manchego toast, or the sauteed squid with lemon paprika butter; or go cold with the assorted cheese plate, the herbed goat cheese-stuffed Piquillo peppers, or the tuna caper toast. Top the tapas off with crema Catalana for dessert. Dinner nightly. Credit cards. $
