Specialties of the house include pizzas topped with venison sausage, duck sausage, rabbit sausage, pheasant sausage, smoked salmon and filet mignon. Lunch Tuesday through Saturday, dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

WASABI
900 Frenchmen St. 943-9433;
www.wasabirestaurant.com

Fancy enough for a nice date but casual enough for the regulars who order a bottle of sake and the enormous Big Easy Roll: wasabi and tobiko, tuna, salmon, yellowtail, snow crab, avocado, and asparagus, sliced into eight pieces and served with a mayo sauce on the side. Lunch weekdays, dinner daily, late-night Friday and Saturday. $$

WEAVER'S PO-BOYS

This butcher-shop-turned-lunch-stop serves up hot-lunch specials daily: grilled pork chop and jambalaya (Tuesdays), baked chicken (Wednesdays) and Salisbury steak and mashed potatoes (Thursdays). Another fave is the Weaver's Club po-boy: hot roast beef with gravy, hot turkey, ham and cheese. Lunch Monday through Saturday. Credit cards. $

WEST END CAFE

WILLIAMS RESTAURANT
3100 Toledano St. 821-5023

With Big Daddy Cole manning the barbecue pit, diners are in for a treat. The Saturday and Sunday lunch specials give the masses what they want, with barbecued smoked sausage, chicken, ribs, and ribeye steaks. For dinner, try a seafood platter served with homemade rolls or cornbread. A special lunch menu for those counting calories offers a charbroiled chicken breast on Thursdays and grilled shrimp on Fridays. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards and checks. $

THE WINE LOFT
752 Tchoupitoulas St. 561-0116;
www.thewineloft.net

The Wine Loft offers light European fare in addition to its full bar and wine selection -- more than 80 by the glass, 200 by the bottle. Try escargot bourguignonne, wrapped in a pastry shell and drizzled with Herbsaint cream, and the baked brie en croute, served with seasonal fruit and a black walnut vinaigrette. Reservations recommended for parties of eight or more. Dinner daily. Credit cards. $$

WINNER'S FOOD AND SPIRITS
2216 Hickory Ave., Harahan 737-3148

Creole, Italian and seafood specialties are all on the menu at Winner's. The house recommends the Crab on Crab, a jumbo softshell crab deep fried and topped with creamy crabmeat sauce, served with angel hair pasta. The Veal Sorrentine is one of several veal dishes: this one serves paneed veal between two slices of eggplant, topped with red sauce and mozzarella and served with angel hair. Reservations recommended. Breakfast Friday through Sunday, lunch and dinner daily. Credit cards. $$
