2001 Midi Vin de Pays d'Oc (Rouge)
Languedoc, France
$8-$11
The term vins de pays on a wine label refers to France's regional country wines, in this case, the Languedoc region. While vins de pays are generally considered more rustic than their neighbors from distinct appellations, they are quite drinkable and often very good values. This wine -- a traditional blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan grapes produced from the area's gravelly, limestone soil -- offers aromas of rosemary and thyme, with plum, dark currants and spice notes on the palate. Good with red beans and sausage, beef or lamb stew, gumbo, and pizza. Available at both Whole Foods Market locations, Dorignac's, some Sav-A-Centers, Rouse's on Veterans Memorial Boulevard near Transcontinental and in Covington.
