2000 Snoqualmie Syrah
Columbia Valley, Washington
$9-$12

Washington 's large Columbia Valley, known for its great Cabernet Sauvignons and Merlots, is now producing fine wines from Syrah grapes. Plantings of the easy-thriving varietal have increased dramatically in the state in recent years. This wine, from the tiny Snoqualmie Vineyards winery, was aged nine months in two-thirds French oak barrels and one-third American oak. The wine gives off dark fruit aromatics with hints of mocha, followed by deep, concentrated flavors of blackberry, blueberry, spice and oak nuances. Good with barbecue, smoked turkey or veal chops. Available at most Sav-A-Centers, Lakeview Fine Foods, Dorignac 's, Rouse 's on Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, and Rouse 's and Acquistapace 's markets in Covington.
