Freedom Fruit
The 10-year anniversary of South African democracy is the motivation behind Jazz Fest's South African Pavilion, as well as various cultural exhibits and activities held around town in conjunction with the festival. From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, Chef Tracey Williams will serve food and drinks made with Amarula Cream Liqueur at TwiRoPa Mills' (1544 Tchoupitoulas St.) South African Freedom Day Celebration. Amarula is made from cream and the fermented fruit of South Africa's Marula tree; Williams makes sno-balls, creme brulee and chocolate-covered strawberries with the liqueur. For more information on the Freedom Day Celebration, visit www.nosaconn.com.

Blessed Baking
It has been a month since Priestess Miriam of the Voodoo Spiritual Temple blessed the new VooBrew Coffee & Tea (830 N. Rampart St., 324-6420). The cafe's owners, also the proprietors of the Olde Victorian Inn & Miss Celie's Spa Orleans (914 N. Rampart St., 522-2446), serve freshly baked pastries (including red velvet cake), as well as coffee drinks and teas. Laptop users may avail themselves of the wireless network, and smokers are welcome to the courtyard. VooBrew is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Call about Priestess Miriam's Tuesday classes on simple voodoo rituals, or visit www.voobrew.com to view a menu.

Spain Sampler
Rio Mar (800 S. Peters St., 525-3474) is going all-out Spain with a traditional tapas menu served weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chorizo, jamon serrano, shrimp al ajillo and pressed sandwiches are a few of the 25 tapas offered; all are priced between $4 and $8 and designed to encourage group snacking. In the spirit of Spaniards' predilection to drink well but not guzzle when they eat, chef-owner Adolfo Garcia also plans to roll out a wine cart with Spanish wines and sherries to be poured in half-portions for roughly $3 each.
