2002 Xanadu Merlot
Frankland River, Australia $9-$12
The attractiveness of Australian wines can be traced to their fruit-forward style, accessibility and good value. Made from 100 percent Merlot grapes, this supple, full-bodied wine offers a delightful bouquet of ripe plums and chocolate with oaky undertones. On the palate, the wine delivers generous amounts of ripe berry fruit flavors, plus dark cherries and spice notes. Typically robust, the wine is drinking well now with its multi-layered, forward fruit, even tannins and firm acidity. However, the wine will improve with two-to-four years cellaring. Good with leg of lamb, stewed rabbit, and herbal roasted chicken. Available at Elio's Wine Warehouse, Dorignac's, Winn-Dixie in Slidell, Acquistapace's Covington Super Market and Hugh's Wine Cellar in Mandeville.
