Tina Lebeau and Emery Dussold,
students at the New Orleans Judo Academy, recently placed in the U.S. Judo Association's 2004 National Junior Championships in Chicago. Lebeau won first place in the 16 year old 78+ kgs. division and second place in the 17-to-20 year old 78+ kgs. division, and made the U.S. Judo National Roster. Dussold won second place in the 11 year old boys 50 kgs. division.
"Salute Our Troops,"
a statewide drive to collect food, personal hygiene products and other items for Louisiana troops serving overseas, gathered more than 20,000 donations to be distributed by the Louisiana National Guard. The program, overseen by Lt. Gov, Mitch Landrieu's office and the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, collected the goods in state welcome centers for a month.
Michael A. Ross,
associate professor of history at Loyola University, has won the 2004 Peter Seaborg Award from the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of Civil War at Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.V. The honor recognizes an outstanding nonfiction book about the Civil War era. Ross is the author of Justice of Shattered Dreams: Samuel Freeman Miller and the Supreme Court During the Civil War Era.
Louisiana legislators
who voted in the past session to lighten state regulations governing lobbyists are responsible for what state Public Service Commission member Jimmy Field calls "a step backward" in the state's ethics law. Last week, the PSC voted 3-2 to dump its existing regulations to comply with the state's more lenient new rules. Among other changes, lobbyists now have to report what they spend on commissioners and their staff only if it is above a certain amount.
