2002 Schug Pinot Noir Carneros,
California $17-$26
Walter Schug -- a man with a mission -- was raised in Germany on the Rhine Valley's only Pinot Noir estate. After his wine studies, he came to California where he made great Cabernet and Riesling for Phelps. Yet he longed to create the fine Pinot Noirs of his youth. With this distinguished wine, he can consider "mission accomplished." Red berry and spicy oak aromas are followed by bright cherry, currant and strawberry flavors. Good with lamb, duck and grilled fish. Available at Elio's, Dorignac's, Martin Wine Cellar in Metairie, Langenstein's in Metairie, Cellars of River Ridge, Hugh's Wine Cellar and Wine Down in Mandeville and Acquistapace's Covington SuperMarket. (Store listings current at press time.)
