2001 Jean-Luc Colombo Les Abeilles Cotes
Du Rhone France $10-$13
Geography and French wine laws separate the Rhone Valley's distinctly different northern and southern districts. In the north, Syrah is the only red grape allowed. In the southern half, a dozen red grape varieties can be used in wines such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and Cotes-du-Rhone, the latter largely produced in the South. A blend of 50 percent Grenache, 30 percent Syrah and 20 percent Mouvedre, this wine presents raspberry, strawberry, leather and spice aromas. On the palate, expect ripe red fruit and licorice flavors amid silky tannins. Matches well with grilled lamb, pork and cheeses. Available at Hopper's Wines and Spirits, Whole Foods Market (Uptown) and Dorignac's. (Store listings current at press time.)
