WINE OF THE WEEK By Brenda Maitland 11 16 04

2000 Produtorri Barbaresco
Piedmont, Italy
$28-$3

On the strength of wines rated very nearly perfect, Piedmont's highly praised 2000 vintage of Nebbiolo-based red wines became the first-ever entire region declared 100 points by Wine Spectator. This estate bottled wine -- sourced from 100 percent Nebbiolo grapes -- was aged 20 months in oak casks. Rich, full-bodied and structured, the wine presents aromas of berries, black cherries and subtle oak accents giving way to intense fruit flavors and ripe, even tannins on the palate. Harmonious and well-balanced. Drink now or cellar for five or 10 years. Good with pasta Bolognese, risotto, roasted meats, fowl and rustic dishes. Available at both Martin Wine Cellar locations. (Store listings current at press time.)
