WINE OF THE WEEK By Brenda Maitland 12 07 04

2001 Dominio de Tares Mencia
Bierzo, Spain
$14-$15

Sourced from 40-year-old vines, the wine reflects the slate-quartz nature of this promising region's hillside soils. The wine is made from 100 percent Mencia, the predominant local grape descended from Cabernet Franc vines planted by invading Romans more than 1,500 years ago. Aged six months in a mixture of French and American oak, the wine expresses bright, intense black fruit aromas with characteristic mineralilty, followed by ripe blackberry and olive amidst even tannins and a touch of vanillin. Honored as one of Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines for 2003, the wine will age for several years. Good with steaks, roasts and burgers. Available at Hopper's, Cork & Bottle and Bacchanal. (Store listings current at press time.)
