Turkey Day Race Doubles Turnout

Runners crowd the starting line before the 97th annual Turkey Day Race in City Park on Thanksgiving.
Local charities -- as well as a favorite local tradition -- were bolstered by sunny skies and mild temperatures this Thanksgiving, as the 2004 turnout for the 97th annual Turkey Day Race in City Park doubled that of 2003. This year, 1,383 participated in either the 5K run or 1-mile walk/run, up from 761 in 2003, in an event hailed as the nation's oldest continuously held non-marathon race, sponsored as always by the New Orleans Athletic Club. Brendan Minihan Jr. won the men's overall competition with a time of 25:37; Allison Moll took the women's top honor with 31:15. Proceeds from the Turkey Day Race benefit the Spina Bifida Association and the Foundation for Entertainment Development and Education, which promotes the performing arts among local youth.
