The Best and the Worst of the Week

Tammi Fleming,
who heads up the Kingsley House program Health Care For All, was one of four experts nationwide called to Washington, D.C., last week for 'Strengthening Healthcare,' a National Institutes of Health forum moderated by President George W. Bush. Health Care For All uses 'walkers and talkers' who go door-to-door in local public housing projects to enroll uninsured people in Medicaid, Medicare and LaCHIP.

The Contemporary Arts Center
has received a two-year, $70,000 grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The grant, the second that the local arts institution has received from the New York-based foundation, will support four exhibitions, including the current Raving in the Desert and Raw Data, the 2005 Louisiana Biennial and 2006¹s Celebrating Freedom: The Art of Willie Birch.

New Orleans Public Schools
already lost $600,000 because of unclaimed federal grants, according to state officials. NOPS is now trying to stem the tide of lost grant money and has until Sept. 30 to file late requests to obtain some of the $30 million in federal grant money originally available to the district.

Louisiana
scored last in a national ranking of states' public high school students qualifying for college credit after taking advanced placement courses, according to the nonprofit College Board. In 2004, only 2.5 percent of high school students in Louisiana scored high enough to qualify for college credit; the national average is 13 percent.
