2002 Casa Solar Plata Tierra de Castilla,
Spain $6-$9
Consecheros y Criadores, the makers of this good-quality, value-priced wine, combine traditional winemaking techniques with the latest technology in their modernized production facilities in Rioja. Made from 100 percent Tempranillo, the grapes were sourced from vineyards in Sacedon-Mondejar southeast of Madrid. Aged only three months in American oak, this medium-bodied, quaffable wine has a rustic, earthy quality that would improve with splash decanting. Look for aromas of red fruit, a whiff of chocolate, with understated flavors of cherry, oak, cinnamon notes and smooth, subtle tannins. Good with game, grilled meats and dry cheese. Available at Hopper's Wines and Spirits, The Wine Seller and Cork & Bottle. (Store listings current at press time.)
