2002 Trumpeter Malbec/Syrah Tupungato,
Argentina
$10-$11
Established in 1885 by Don Felipe Rutini, Bodega La Rural -- now run by fourth-generation family members -- produced this wine with grapes sourced from the Tupungato district of Mendoza at nearly 3,500 feet above sea level. Warm, sunny days and cool evening temperatures promote a slow ripening season and the development of concentrated fruit flavors and aromas. The 50-50 blend spent nine months aging in 70 percent American and 30 percent French oak. Expect ripe berry aromas with chocolate and meaty notes followed by blackberry, cherry and espresso flavors. Good with beef tenderloin, grilled eggplant and lamb stew. Available at Hopper's Wines and Spirits and Cork & Bottle. (Store listings current at press time.)
