2004 Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough, New Zealand $14-$16
Marlborough's cool maritime climate balanced by an abundance of sunshine produces optimum growing conditions for slow ripening Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes are sourced from premium vineyards in the Wairu and Awatere River valleys planted over gravel beds in shallow, stony soil. Fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel, the wine developed distinctive, intense varietal expression. Herbaceous aromas, with hints of currant and camphor precede the crisp, refreshing mouthful of classic ripe citrus and grassy flavors. Racy and focused, the wine imparts a clean, lingering finish. Good with salads, asparagus and shellfish, particularly oysters, mussels and lobster. Available at Whole Foods Market (Uptown), Dorignac's and Cellars of River Ridge. (Store listings current at press time.)
