2002 Cousino Macul Antiguas Reservas Cabernet
Sauvignon
Maipo Valley, Chile $13-$15
Chile's oldest winery family sourced the grapes for this excellent wine from the Alta Maipo region just below the Andes. The zone's mixture of arid, infertile soils stress the vines, containing vigorous growth and encouraging smaller berries and clusters that translate to more flavor concentration. Add a micro-climate offering ideal conditions of optimum sunlight, low evening temperatures, and the result is a long, slow, ripening period, balanced acidity, good structure and depth. Aromas of currants and cedar precede dark cherry and berry flavors with spice and pepper notes. Good with roast chicken, game and Mexican-style cuisine. Available at Hopper's Wines and Spirits, and The Wine Cellar. (Store listings current at press time.)
