2002 Spadina Una Rosa Signature Nero d'Avola
Sicily, Italy
$15-$17

Vineyards thrive in the hills of central Sicily between Palermo and Catania, baking in the sun's rays over the ancient island just off the tip of Italy. Nero d'Avola, the grape for this wine, evolved through clonal experimentation to reach its current distinction as Sicily's most promising native grape. Matured in small French oak barrels for six months, the wine offers leathery, red and black fruit aromas followed by dark, rich, fully ripened velvety fruit with cedar and spice on the finish. Good with spicy Italian pasta and hearty, savory dishes like game, lamb or beef. Available at Vieux Carre Wine and Spirits, Sidney's Wine Cellar and Dorignac's. (Store listings current at press time.)
