As a leading New Orleans artist and one of this country's foremost African-American sculptors, John T. Scott has led a full and busy life. He has a lot to show for it, as this Circle Dance retrospective of his 40year career makes clear. Drawing on African, Caribbean, American and local influences, Scott creates vibrant images and kinetic sculptures in his own unique style, a visual language sometimes called 'optical jazz' for its eloquently harmonic expression of color, rhythm and spirituality. A native of New Orleans long associated with Xavier University, John T. Scott has been the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation's 'Genius Grant' and numerous other commissions all over America. The 187 sculptures, prints, paintings and drawings seen here provide us with a comprehensive look at his evolution over time.
