Kingdom of Heaven (R)
We’ve seen so much of this before from director Ridley Scott — epic battles, historical revisionism, moral quandaries, visual splendor — but there’s something about Kingdom of Heaven that makes us take notice and want to go. Scott — whose canon includes everything from Blade Runner and Alien to Thelma & Louise, G.I. Jane, Black Hawk Down and Gladiator — has never shied away from the sometimes shaded battle between good and evil. It’s always played out on a grand scale, subtlety be damned. Here he takes on no less weighty a matter than the Crusades, with Orlando Bloom as a French blacksmith recruited by a knight (Liam Neeson), who reveals himself to be the blacksmith’s father, to join him in trying to maintain the shaky peace between Christians and Muslims in Jerusalem. Well, we all know how that goes. Co-stars Eva Green and Jeremy Irons.
