2002 Alexander Valley Vineyards
Syrah Sonoma, California $16-$18
Whatever you've heard about California Syrah, try this beauty from Sonoma's Alexander Valley and imagine you're in Northern Rhone. A classic blend of Syrah with 2 percent Viognier, the grapes were sourced from the winery's estate vineyards. Aged 14 months in primarily used French and American oak, the wine sports intense ripe, dark berry fruit aromas with nuances of plum and blueberry. On the palate, bursts of cassis and blackberries nestle in undertones of vanillin oak. Silky well-integrated tannins create a long, smooth ride to the finish. Good with grilled meats, steak and prime rib of beef or venison roasts. Available at The Wine Seller and Cork & Bottle. (Store listings current at press time.)
