Spirit of Place: Art of Acadiana
By
D. Eric Bookhardt
It's a place apart, unlike any other. Acadiana, or southwest Louisiana, is justifiably famous for its food and music as well as an overall joie d'vivre based on a deeply rooted love of a unique lifestyle and the exotic ingredients that go into it. Somewhat less known are the contemporary arts of the region, the modern expression of a deeply rooted sensibility that harks to the pervasive French heritage as well as environmental influences including 'the colors, textures, forms, materials and visual rhythms of the area.' According to curator David Houston, 'The work in Spirit of Place: Art of Acadiana looks at individuality grounded in the idea of place. The artists represented in the exhibition share more than a common geography and culture; they share an unusually tight-knit sense of community.'
