Nobody Knows (NR)
Hirokazu Kore-eda is considered one of Japan's most intriguing filmmakers, which is one of the reasons why his most recent work, Nobody Knows, seems like an excellent choice for Zeitgeist to kick off its latest film series: Japanese Contemporary and Avant-Garde Films. Nobody Knows is based on the true story of four siblings (each by different fathers) abandoned by their mother to fend for themselves in a small Tokyo apartment. The film has received almost universal critical acclaim despite its harrowing themes of abandonment and isolation, underscored by Kore-eda's ultra-intimate camerawork. 'But because the movie also sticks closely to the children's point of view -- and in particular to the experience of Akira (Yuya Yagira, pictured above) it also offers a measure of relief,' writes The New York Times' A.O. Scott. (Yagira, only 14 years old, won the Best Actor Award at last year's Cannes Film Festival.) Tickets $6 general admission, $5 students/seniors, $4 Zeitgeist members. -- David Lee Simmons
