LPA Honors Gambit Weekly

The Louisiana Press Association honored Gambit Weekly with 11 editorial and design awards at its 125th annual convention in Lafayette last month.

Gambit Weekly's honors included three first-place awards. Top honors in Best Regular Column went to Clancy DuBos' Politics column, which judges praised as 'well-crafted and moving commentary.' Katy Reckdahl, Allen Johnson Jr. and Lili LeGardeur's work on voting issues scored top honors for Best Continuing Coverage of a Governmental Issue. In their comments, judges singled out Reckahl's 'Not Barred,' which covered efforts to inform locals with felony records of their voting rights, as both 'compelling' and 'enjoyable to read.' Finally, a series of essays written by New Orleans Public School students marking the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education received a first-place award in Community Service/Service to Readers. The package of stories was 'vital,' judges said.

Second-place honors went to Donn Young in Best Feature Photo, Cheryl Gerber in Best Photo Feature, and Bill Sasser in Individual Feature Writing. Honorable mentions were awarded to Sara Roahen in Individual Feature Writing and Eileen Loh Harrist in Best Feature Story.

Gambit Weekly's design awards included a second-place honor for Staff Generated - Color 1/2 Page or Under, which was awarded to Michael Dawson. Jennie Westerman received a third-place award for Staff Generated Black & White 1/2 Page or Under, and Dora Sison received an honorable mention for In-Paper Promotion Color.
