2004 Vansha Dry White Paarl, South
Africa $10-$12
Last week's French Burgundy was described as an excellent summer house wine -- for red wine aficionados -- and this charming little South African chiller could well be its white counterpart. Made from 79 percent Chenin Blanc and 21 percent Sauvignon Blanc, this unpretentious off-dry wine offers a clean, crisp and lively freshness on the palate. Herbaceous aromas with pear notes lead to concentrated tropical fruit flavors like guava, melon and pineapple. Serve this well-structured, easy-drinking wine with good acidity as an aperitif or with soft cheeses, boiled shellfish, seafood, cream sauces and Asian cuisine. Available at Hopper's Wines and Spirits, The Wine Seller and Cork & Bottle. (Store listings current at press time.)
