Thrashing : 1980s Skateboard Art

By D. Eric Bookhardt

Hey, listen up -- this is your last chance. Thrashing, the art show inspired by 1980s skateboard culture at the Big Top, is in its final week. According to guest curator Dan Tague: 'The look of thrasher-style skating was hard, punk, grungy Š the skaters were seen as delinquents. Thrasher 'Skate or Die' stickers and anarchy symbols cluttered skateboard decks amidst the scuffed-up screen prints of neon green monsters and skulls.' The show pays homage to artists like Jim Phillips, famous for his Slasher and Roscopp series decks for Santa Cruz Skateboard Company, Vernon Johnson's skull and bones graphics for Powell and Peralta Skateboards, as well as all the incredible skaters. Almost everyone in this show was a skater in the 1980s, so this slice of outlaw culture is part of their identity as artists.
