Gamble Brothers Band, and Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen

By Alex Rawls

The Gamble Brothers Band is a funk band from Memphis, Tenn., that has clearly studied the New Orleans musical milieu. On last year's Back to the Bottom (Archer), its funk is a little perkier and a little more poppy than the homegrown stuff, and many jams start with structured, traditional songs. The grooves are familiar, though, and drummer Chad Gamble lays back nicely, particularly on a surprisingly funky cover of Randy Newman's 'Little Criminals' that features a hot clavinet solo. Like many local funk groups, Gamble Brothers Band keeps the lineup spare -- organ, tenor sax, bass and drums -- but when 'Land of Soul' kicks in, it does so with a lot of sound and energy. Hammond B-3 organ player Al Gamble drives the show, filling, bouncing behind the beat, and even getting a little out there on the instrumental 'Cadillactopus.' Tickets $10.
