Loyola University public relations students
recently won the national Bateman Case Study Competition, the eighth time in nine years that Loyola's Public Relations Student Society of America's Bateman Team has placed in the top three in the national contest. The students' award-winning public-relations campaign against cheating, 'Check Out My Ethics,' led to Loyola administrators considering the institution of a university honor code.
Dr. Debra K. DePrato,
a forensic psychiatrist and director of the Juvenile Justice Program at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, has been named one of 25 Exemplary Psychiatrist Award winners by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The awards recognize psychiatrists who provide exemplary services to mentally ill people living within the justice system.
Heidi Lovett Daniels
denied fellow Orleans Parish School Board member Una Anderson the chance to speak before the board voted last week on a motion aimed at undermining Anderson's candidacy for a state Senate seat. Daniels cited Roberts Rules of Order to justify not allowing Anderson to speak, saying the question had been called. Her ruling, which came after Anderson endured vicious attacks from the audience, was not only callous but also incorrect (www.robertsrules.com).
Nina Sue Broyles
of Baton Rouge last week permanently surrendered her license to practice law, four years after admitting to her role in an international baby-selling ring. Broyles pleaded guilty to participating in an illegal adoption service that paid pregnant Russian women a small fee to travel to Louisiana under false pretenses, give birth and place their newborns for adoption. Broyles and her cohorts were much more handsomely rewarded than the Russian women.
