'Prytania After Hours': Freaks  

Over the past year we've seen special film series hosted at such non-traditional venues as the Bridge Lounge, NOMA's Stern Auditorium, Deutsches Haus, Iron Rail and even a private residence for The New Orleans Lyceum -- with Zeitgeist steadily plugging away with its own diverse array of thought-provoking and socially conscious screenings. But we love it when the theaters get involved above and beyond the call of duty. The Prytania kicks things off with a series of fun, late-night fare that provides a true, movie-house experience. First up: Tod Browning's 1932 cult horror classic, Freaks (released last year on DVD). The film traces the romance between a midget and a beauty (Harry Earles and Olga Baclanova, pictured) within a traveling circus and how this crossing of boundaries disrupts the social order. As Browning's opening statement puts it, 'In ancient times, anything that deviated from the normal was considered an omen of ill luck or representative of evil.' Also coming soon: Canal Place's midnight movies series and the Saenger Theatre's Summer Classic Movies. Call for ticket info.
