International Arts Festival

By Frank Etheridge

Though it now offers a week of music, poetry, art, food and culture, the International Arts Festival is once again anchored by concerts Saturday and Sunday in City ParkÕs Marconi Meadows, where youÕll find local favorites such as Russell Batiste & the Orchestra From Da Hood, Bamboula 2000 and the Wild Magnolias, along with stars such as old-school hip-hop icon Slick Rick (pictured), the Afro-Cuban jazz of Tito Puente Jr., Common, Maxie Priest and others. Local Caribbean and African food vendors such as BoswellÕs and Bennachin will be at Marconi Meadows as well, plus a variety of artisans. Earlier in the week, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, the festival hosts the Lip Loc Poetry Lounge, a spoken-word showcase at TwiRoPa (1333 Tchoupitoulas St.), and Cultural Diversity Day at 4 p.m. Friday at Woldenberg Park (Canal Street at Mississippi River).
