WINE OF THE WEEK 06 28 05

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2001 Sanford Pinot Noir
Santa Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County, Calif.
$25 -$27
Love it or hate it, the quirky Sideways film is credited with awakening much of America to the incredible pleasures of Pinot Noir, the grape responsible for many of the worldÕs finest wines. Obsessed Pinot Noir fans will find much to love in this full-bodied, well-balanced, unfiltered wine from the excellent 2001 vintage. A compelling bouquet of ripe dark berries yields to intense fruit flavors of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry with mineral and earth notes. Firm tannins call for decanting. Wonderful alone or as an accompaniment to grilled salmon or tuna, chicken, lamb, duck, quail, beef and mushroom dishes. Available at Prytania Liquor and DorignacÕs. (Store listings current at press time.)
