WINE OF THE WEEK 08 16 05

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2002 Montevina Zinfandel
Sierra Foothills. CA
$8-$11 Retail
Aged nine months in American oak, this wine is primarily Zinfandel with small amounts of Barbera, Syrah, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah added. Blackberry fruit, black currants and plumy flavors with a touch of pepper follow inviting aromas of burnt cherry with just a whiff of spice. The finish falls off somewhat, but the soft, sweet tannins, good structure and forward fruit more than compensate. You might want to pour it a half hour before drinking to allow the alcohol on the backside to blow off. Good with barbecue, smoked pork tenderloin, Cajun, Asian and Italian cuisines. Where to buy it: Cork & Bottle, all Sav-A-Centers, Winn-Dixie on Tchoupitoulas Street, Dorignac's, Langenstein's (Metairie location) and Acquistapace's Covington Super Market. Where to drink it: Upperline and Mr. Gyros. (Listings current at press time.)'
