WINE OF THE WEEK 08 23 05

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2002 Poderi di Luigi Einaudi Dolcetto di Dogliani
Piedmont, Italy
$14-$18 Retail
Founded more than 100 years ago by Luigi Einaudi, who became Italy's first president, the estate is believed to have originated Dolcetto in the historic Dogliani terroir and certainly was first to produce wine under this appellation. An easy drinking wine with a light-to-medium body, the Einaudi offers deep, dark, stewed fruit aromas with just a subtle hint of spice. On the palate, ripe black fruit, especially black cherry, dominates with bittersweet chocolate undertones. The wine's supple tannins and low acid are characteristic of Dolcettos. Good with veal parmigiana, osso bucco, spedini, pasta with red gravy and other Italian specialties. Where to buy it: Elio's Wine Warehouse and Dorignac's. Where to drink it: Ristorante Carmelo and Bella Luna (Listings current at press time.)
