WINE OF THE WEEK 06 20 06

Wine of the Week

By Brenda Maitland

2004 Chateau dÕAqueria Tavel Rosé
Rhone, France
$15-$17 Retail
With most French wines, the label indicates the specific area where the wine is from. In this case, the name ÒTavelÓ refers to a small village in the south of France just above Avignon, and the world's most distinctive pink wine. A blend of both red and white grapes Ñ Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Mouvedre Ñ the wine is intense yet exudes finesse. Produced by one of the oldest and most renowned estates in Tavel, this bone-dry, full-bodied wine offers floral and red berry fragrances with vibrant, crisp fruit flavors, spicy, peppery notes and refreshing, balanced acidity. Drink young. Serve chilled. The wine's robust qualities make it equally appealing to serve with hardy, garlicy dishes as well as lighter fare. Where to buy it: Cork & Bottle and Dorignac's. Where to drink it: Longbranch in Abita Springs (Listings current at press time.)
