When the Legendary Pink Dots formed in the late '70s, the shimmery psychedelic sound of the 60's was already turning toxic -- and they ran with that. The UK-based band, which relocated to the friendlier city of Amsterdam during the Thatcher '80s, took the slightly poisonous experimental sound of late Pink Floyd as a jumping-off point and rode that hazy, toxic trail through twenty-five years and just about as many albums. Their heavily textured sound dips into industrial doom and gloom, psychedelic wistfulness and all the fuzzy spaces in-between -- making disturbing, strange and boundlessly intricate music that keeps a loyal cult audience. Their 25th anniversary album, Your Children Placate You From Premature Graves (Roir 2006) -- the title speaks to their state of mind as a grown-up band -- finds them thinking, as grown-ups do, about issues of legacy, consequence and taking stock of matters.
