PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MANÕS CHEST (PG-13) Ñ C- Gore VerbinskiÕs over-long (2 1/2 hours) sequel to his 2003 blockbuster is a considerable disappointment. The story is almost incomprehensible and flimsily exists to provide a series of action sequences featuring a menagerie of creepy crawly slimies. Johnny DeppÕs brilliantly daft performance saved the original time after time, but heÕs got too little to do this time and too few new tricks up his talented sleeve. The whole of this entry is just a prelude to next summerÕs third installment. DonÕt sully your good memories of the original. (Barton) AMC Palace 10, AMC Palace 12, AMC Palace 16, AMC Palace 20, Holiday 12, Hollywood Cinemas 9, Movies 8, Prytania

STRANGERS WITH CANDY (R) Ñ F- Paul DinelloÕs ÒcomedyÓ stars Amy Sedaris as a middle-aged ex-con who returns to her local high school after 32 years in the slammer without realizing that sheÕs any different than the day she left. The picture carves out some apt targets for parody but produces laughs out of none of them. Sedaris, meanwhile, is almost excruciating to watch, a rodentÕs visage of ticks and grimaces who comments on her own bodily functions as if she were remarking on the time and temperature. Humor is a matter of taste, but in my view, this flick is the method by which terrorists produce suicide bombers. I know IÕd probably kill myself and others to avoid watching it a second time. (Barton) (Reviewed in this issue.) Canal Place
