This act, with the intriguing yet cumbersome name, is potentially one of the best under-the-radar bands currently playing. The trio -- formed in Memphis and living at various times between that city, Berlin, and Brooklyn -- has been turning out irrepressibly chic, strange, razor-sharp pop for years, gradually moving away from the garage and soul notes that characterized their Memphis sound and chasing down myriad new sonic possibilities. Their current fierce, punk-edged artiness means all the usual comparisons to Television and the Fall; they also have more than a touch of the degenerate sexiness of the Velvet Underground. Their latest album, ... In The Meantime, their first for new label New York Night Train, is audibly ridden with deep thought. Their last release, A New Commotion / A Different Tension (Transsolar Records, 2004) was moving toward the fierce precision of Meantime, and their arrival at that final destination is an incredibly interesting album equally suited to installing in an art gallery and/or freaking out and pouring beer over yourself. Their abstract explorations into dub and repetitive electronic noise maintain punk rawness; ringleader Nicholas Ray's scathing vocals on the 8-minute opus "Same Suit, Different Tie" are really almost hurtful.
