Interior New Orleans : Pastels by Sandra Burshell
She calls them "roomscapes." It's Sandra Burshell's term for interiors, but "roomscapes" they are because, like landscapes or seascapes, they have qualities of space, light and a certain drama. Unlike them, they are intimate, yet empty of people. But that may not be entirely true. In older, long-inhabited places such as the Napoleon House, the human presence lingers in the shadows, in the air, and especially in the light that seems to saunter like the people who come and go, leaving traces of their aura, a whiff of subtle perfume, an echo of laughter, a ghost of memory or the shadow of a smile. Light can contain such things if it is allowed to breathe, and Burshell tries to make her pastels as graciously textured as the subjects they replicate. -- D. Eric Bookhardt
